Promotion/Underpromotion

Here's how to promote a pawn on your ChessUp 2

Note: A promotion pack is available for purchase here: https://playchessup.com/products/promotion-pack

This promotion pack is not required to promote your pawn. It is possible to use a pawn in place of the promoted piece type if that piece type is not available (see below). As this can be confusing when playing, a promotion pack is recommended.

Definitions:

Promotion is the process of replacing a pawn with another piece when that pawn reaches the last rank (opponents back rank, 1st or 8th rank).

Queening is when a pawn is promoted to a queen. This is the most common kind of promotion.

Underpromotion is when a pawn is promoted to any other piece type, i.e. rook, bishop, or knight.

Promoting Your Piece

When your pawn is on 7th rank (playing white) or the 2nd rank (playing black) you can complete the promotion process in two ways:

Moving the Pawn

  1. Move the pawn to the back rank (8th or 1st).
  2. The square will turn purple and a pop-up will appear on the screen.
  3. Either replace the pawn with the desired piece or select the piece from the screen.
    1. When lifting the pawn, the square will turn blue (white) or green (black).  The square will blink to confirm after you place the promoting piece type.
    2. If you choose the piece type on the screen, the promotion is complete. You can continue to use the pawn as a stand-in for the promoted piece type. At any point in the game, you can replace that pawn with the promoted piece type when one becomes available.

Direct Promotion

  1. Lift up the pawn and remove it from the board.
  2. Place a piece of the desired promotion type (queen, rook, bishop, or knight) on the back rank (8th or 1st).
  3. The promotion is complete.

Promoting Opponents Piece

When your opponent promotes their pawn, the board lights up the move and pops up a window on the screen indicating the promotion piece type. You can promote your opponent's piece in two different ways.

Moving the Pawn

  1. Move the pawn to the back rank.
  2. The pawn will be a stand in for the promoted piece. Be careful to remember that this pawn is no longer a pawn. It is recommended that you replace this pawn with the correct promoted piece type  as soon as one become available.
  3. The promotion is complete.

Direct Promotion

  1. Lift up the pawn and remove it from the board.
  2. Place the promotion piece type, as indicated by the pop-up message on the screen, on the back rank (8th or 1st). If you place the wrong piece type, the square will turn purple and you cannot continue the game until this is corrected.
  3. The promotion is complete.
